Authorization Basis: El Instituto Meteorológico Nacional de Costa Rica (fundado en 1888) -Dirección adscrita al Ministerio de Ambiente y Energía (MINAE)- es el ente científico que tiene a cargo la coordinación de todas las actividades meteorológicas en Costa Rica. Su misión es brindar información meteorológica del tiempo, clima, agua, variabilidad y cambio climático a la sociedad costarricense para la prevención de desastres hidrometeorológicos y la seguridad de la navegación tanto aérea como marítima del país. Además de recopilar, estudiar y analizar toda la información climatológica que se registra en el país necesaria para la preparación de estudios e investigaciones en los campos de la agrometeorología, climatología, variabilidad climática, contaminación atmosférica; también en temas de interacción océano-atmósfera, calentamiento global y cambio climático entre otros, para el apoyo del desarrollo en Costa Rica.
